Leadership and Teamwork in Nature

It’s a beautiful Fall day in the Pacific Northwest – crisp and cool outdoors, with a bit of frost in the early morning.  Our city is right in line with the Pacific Coast Flyway, the migration path for Canadian geese moving south for the winter.  All through November you can hear the noisy honking and look up to see great V’s of geese flying over head.  It’s an awesome sight, realizing the instinctive, natural order at work.

You may know geese fly in a V formation because it creates lift for one another, thus saving energy.  (if I had to fly as far as they do, I’d want to save energy, too!)  They can acount for one another, also.  Birds in the back of the group honk to encourage the on in the front to keep up the pace, as they break through wind friction.  When a bird gets exhausted they help him and no bird gets left behind.

Seems to me that we could learn a few things from these geese.  Leadership, teamwork, encouragement, perseverence – it’s not just for the birds!
